Viking Ship Museum
History for all the family – outdoors and indoors
The Vikings’ impressive ships carried them far
and wide in wartime and in peacetime. The
Viking Ship Museum, attractively situated by
Roskilde Fjord, puts Viking times in perspecti-
ve – with a focus on the ships.
Jetty for children. The Viking Ship Museum is
for children of all ages. In the Viking Ship Hall,
there is a jetty, with two Viking ships berthed.
The ships are laden with goods and equip-
ment, making the Viking era almost palpable!
Try on a Viking outfit, climb aboard and expe-
rience the Viking times.
History in the Viking Ship Hall
Get up close and personal with five original
Viking ships from the 11th century.The exhi-
bition tells of ships, life at sea and Viking times.
Let your visit begin with the film about Viking
times and the history of the ships. From 4
May to 30 September, there are free guided
tours for visitors to the museum.The film and
tour provide a unique insight into the art
craft of building Viking ships.
Anaval attack on Roskilde. Models and water-
colours help to portray the exciting story of
a naval attack on Roskilde, hour by hour. The
exhibition portrays the Vikings’ warships and
weapons, the Skuldelev barricade and how it
served as a defence against the attack.
Sailing trips and craftsmanship
The Museum Island is the hub of many diffe-
rent activities. Here you will find a boatyard,
an archaeology workshop and Tunet.
Focus on “the Glendalough
Sea Stallion”
The Viking Ship Museum focuses on the
voyages of Havhingsten (“the Sea Stallion”).
From 1 May, a film will be shown featuring the
voyage to Dublin in the summer of 2007.
From 29 June to 9 August, you can follow the
voyage from Dublin to Roskilde in sound and
images. The information is updated several
times a day to bring you the very latest news.
You can read more about the Sea Stallion on
the next few pages.
Sailing trips from the Museum Harbour . In the
Museum Harbour, you can see the big collec-
tion of reconstructed Viking ships and traditio-
nal Nordic vessels. And they are not just on
show. During the sailing season from 1 May to
30 September, you can enjoy a sailing trip on
the successors to the Viking ships. A sailing trip
in an open boat powered by oarsmen is a
great experience and you can picture what life

aboard a Viking ship must have been like. The
sailing trip lasts about 50 minutes.
workshop, you can see how the parts of the
wreck are cleaned and digitally measured.
There is an exhibition on the major ship finds
and underwater archaeology work.
The Boatyard is open to the public on week-
days all year, and at weekends from 1 May to
30 Sep. Observe the craftsmen at close quar-
ters. In the spring and autumn, wooden boats
in the style of the early 1900s are built – a
tradition rooted in the Viking ships. In July and
August, a small vessel from the Viking period,
the Gokstadfæring, is reconstructed.
Activities at Tunet
– Viking meeting place.
During the peak season, Tunet, on the
Museum Island, is a hub of activities and
demonstrations for children and adults alike.
For example, there are Viking crafts, a paint
shop and minting of coins. On a replica Viking
loom, 40 m of woollen sailcloth is made. 28
June-17 August there are archery demon-
strations and the opportunities to have a go.

On Saturday 9 August , the Vikings aboard the Sea Stallion return home to a big festive welcome
event on the Museum Island and in Roskilde itself. Read about Havhingsten on the next page.
From 9-12 August , the museum is also invaded by Vikings.Viking market with Viking produce, food
and beverages. Lots of Viking activities for children and adults with things to see and things to try out
for yourself.

– Follow the voyage from Dublin to Roskilde, arriving 9 August 2008
“The Glendalough Sea Stallion”
Built at the museum’s boatyard, the Sea
Stallion is the world’s biggest reconstruction
of a Viking ship. The original ship was built by
Vikings in Ireland in 1042.Three decades later,
the ship ended its days at the bottom of
Roskilde Fjord, and today it can be seen in
the Viking Ship Hall.

Experience the Sea Stallion’s voyage at
the museum
The Viking Ship Museum focuses on the
voyages of the Sea Stallion. From 1 May, a film
will be shown featuring the voyage to Dublin.
You can watch these impressive footage on
the big screen. You can observe the crew
close up day by day – so close that you
almost feel you’re on board with them.
Roskilde – Dublin
On 1 July 2007, a crowd of 10,000 at the
Museum Harbour bade farewell to the ship
and her crew, who were also met with hospi-
tality and interest at every stage of the voya-
ge. After a fantastic journey of 1,145 nautical
miles (2,120 km) around the north of
Scotland, the Sea Stallion arrived on schedu-
le for the official reception in Dublin on 14
August 2007, where a 100,000-strong crowd
hailed the crew of 65.
From 29 June to 9 August, you can follow the
voyage from Dublin to Roskilde in sounds
and images transmitted home from the crew
via satellite. At the same time, current infor-
mation on the ship’s speed and course, the
wind strength and the height of the waves
will be plotted on an electronic map. You
simply can’t get any closer than this to the
epic voyage and all the unexpected things a
1000-year-old warship encounters!
The Sea Stallion returns to Roskilde
The ship overwintered in Dublin and on 28
June 2008 she commences the return voya-
ge to Roskilde. This voyage will take the ship
around the south coast of England. On the
way, the ship will once again pass land areas
where Vikings exerted a major influence. On
9 August, the Sea Stallion arrives in Roskilde,
