everyProgram Listing. Italwaystellsyouexactlywhatchangesyou'llneed
tomake foryourcomputer. (TheADAMneedsspecialchanges. Keepreading
tolearnhowtomake them.)
It'sagoodideatoreadthe "IfYouHave..." information beforeyoustart
typinginyourprogram. IfthisisyourowncopyofComputerSpaceAdven
tures, youmaywanttouseapenorpenciltomarkthe ProgramListingwith
the changes you'll need.
There'smoreinformationabouteachofthesecomputersattheendof
thissection. Besuretoreaditbefore startingout!
Ifyou haveanyothercomputer, the answerisstillYES! Butyoumay
have toexperimentuntilyoufindthe exactchangesyourmachine needsto
runeachprogram. Thatshouldbesimple. We'vetriedhardtouseonlythe
partsofBASIC thatare available on mostmachines.
Willmyprogramrunassoonasltypeitin?
Ifaprogramrunsassoonasyoutypeitin, you'reanabsolutelyamaz
ingtypist — andaveryluckyone! Everybodymakeslittletypingmistakes —
evenusexperts! Butinacomputerprogram, littlemistakescancauseBIG
trouble.
Ifaprogram doesn'tseemtorunright, orifyou getanerrormessage —
somethinglike "SyntaxError" or "SN?" or "YouDummy!" — you'llhaveto
gohuntingforyourmistakes. Programmerscallthembugs. Remember, you
putthemthere, andyourprogramwon'trunrightuntilyousquishoutevery
lastone! The official wordforthatis "debugging."
HowdoIgetthebugsoutofmyprogram?
Whenyoutypeinaprogram, youmusttype eachline exactlyasit
appearsinthe listing. Ifyou miss even one space orone comma, yourpro
gramprobablywon'trun thewayitshould.
First, checkyourprogramline bylineagainstthelistinginthebook. It's
agoodideatoLISTonlyafewlinesatatime, usingcommandslike LIST
100-150. Thatway, thewholeLISTwon'tscrollupyourscreenbeforeyou
getachanceto read it.
You'llprobablyslap yourheadwhenyou discovertheidiotic goofsyou
made. With some computers, you'll have to typethewhole line inagainto
makeacorrection. With others, youcanjusttype inthe changes. Learn
whichwayyourcomputerworks: It'llsaveyoulotsoftyping.
Second, be sure you've made the changesyourparticularmachine
needs. Alwayslookatthe "IfYou Have. . ." sectionforyourparticular
computer.
Ifyourprogramstill doesn'trun, don'tgiveup! Thereareplentyof
thingsyoumayhavedonewrong. Howdoweknow?Becausewedothem
allthe time ourselves! Here aresome thingstoWatchoutfor:

Whenyoustarttypinginaprogram, besure to type NEWandhitthe
ENTER (orRETURN) key. Ifyou don't, you mayfindleftoverlinesfroman
oldprogrampoppingup in yournewone. Itcanbearealmesstoget
them out!
TheCurseoftheMissingLineNumber
It'seasytoskip alinebyaccidentwhenyou'retypingalongprogram.
Remember: Everyprogram in thisbookincludesaREMstatementonline
10with thenameoftheprogram. Thenextline ineveryprogramisline 100,
andthelinescountupbytensfromthere, likethis:

Theonlyline numbersthatwon'tendin0willbelinesyouaddfromthe

upset. Whatkindsofthings? Mainly quotationmarks ("") andleftandright
parentheses(()). Leavingone outisjustaboutguaranteedtogetyousome
sortoferrormessage. That'swhyit'simportantto checkastatementlike

verycarefully. Ifyou're notpositive, counttheparenthesesandquotation
marksonyourotherpersonal computer — yourfingers!
