“Reality TV is killing creativity. There’s no artistic merit in talent shows, fly-on-the-wall documentaries
and scripted reality soaps. We need to start nurturing real talent.”
Write an opinion column for your school newspaper, explaining your views on reality TV.
(24 marks for content and organisation 16 marks for accuracy)

Reality TV is rubbish! It must be stopped!
Have you ever turned on the TV and found there was nothing to
watch? I have! Last night, every single channel I clicked on was full
of reality TV documentaries, talent shows and soaps. I was stuck in
reality TV hell! Reality TV is like a black piece of paper ruining our
TV watching, sucking the light out of our TV programes.
As other teenagers, I’m sure you know what I am talking about. You
can’t walk down the corridors of this school without overhearing
gossip about The Voice or The X Factor. Why are my mates so
obssessed with this mindless garbage? This obssession with fake
‘personalities’ is not healthy. We are becoming reality TV zombies.
These zombies are our own fault. It is our generation demanding
more of this rubbish which keeps TV producers making it. My mum
and dad wouldn’t be seen dead watching towie – would yours? I’m
guessing not. No its our fault we are in this mess.
Its not just young people who we have to blame. Todays world is
all about money, money, money; TV producers know that making
reality TV is cheap. Their greedy and money-grabing and they know
that making shows like this cuts costs because they don’t have to
pay for actors or people to write the scripts. A recent survey found
that reality TV is 95% cheaper than drama to make.
I know that some people will say that reality TV shows use real
people and is more true to life. Perhaps this is the case, but who
wants to live life in the real world all the time? It can be good to
escape in a good drama or some sports.
I’m sure if you think about it you will agree with me. Reality TV is
awful and must be stopped!

A range of linguistic devices is used (rule of three, alliteration, simile), although not always appropriately.
Coherent paragraphs are used, although more discourse markers are needed.
The writing is engaging with a range of arguments presented, although these could be developed more fully.
There is a link between the introduction and conclusion, showing structural awareness.

Clear, controlled punctuation.
Range of sentence structures.
Range of punctuation, with a clear attempt to use it for effect (although exclamation marks are over-used).
Some sophisticated vocabulary, although there are occasional spelling errors.

Total marks awarded: 28 out of 40
