Back in the 1920s and 30s, a young Japanese acupuncturist was working in France. His name among
Westerners was George Ohsawa. After treating Westerners for some time with acupuncture, he came to the
conclusion that such treatment was merely a bandaid. He saw that as long as Westerners did not know how to
live healthy lives, all his treatments were only stop-gap measures. As long as his patients did not eat right and
live moderately, they either continued to be sick or got sick again soon after discontinuing treatment. He
realized that he was treating people who were already ill and that the cause of their illness was, unlike in
undeveloped countries, primarily the result of improper diet and lifestyle. Therefore, Ohsawa gave up the
clinical practice of acupuncture and devoted the rest of his life to teaching Westerners how to live according to
Oriental principles of longevity and good health. His teachings came to be known as Macrobiotics which is
only a Greek way of saying big or long life.
As an American acupuncturist and doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I too have come to the realization
that, although acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are very effective remedially, the best thing I can do
for Western patients is to make better known the traditional Chinese teachings on health preservation. The
premier classic of Chinese medicine, the Nei Jing ( Inner Classic ), says that treating disease after it arises is like
beginning to dig a well after one
