About Your Professors
TIMOTHY B. SHUTT was educated at Yale and the
University of Virginia. He has taught for more than
twenty years at Kenyon College, famed for splendid
teaching, literary tradition, and unwavering commitment
to the liberal arts. No teacher at Kenyon has ever been
more often honored, both by the college and by stu-
dents, for exceptional skills in the classroom and as a
lecturer. Professor Shutt is the director of Kenyon’s
interdisciplinary Integrated Program in Humane
Studies. His courses have always been heavily over-
subscribed, and he lectures on Homer, Plato, Aristotle,
the Bible, the Greek historians, Virgil, and Dante every
year to a packed house.
KATHERINE L. ELKINS was educated at Yale
University and the University of California, Berkeley.
She has won a number of teaching awards at both
Berkeley and Kenyon College, where she is now an
associate professor of humanities. She teaches
Odyssey of the West to Kenyon undergraduates, and
intellectual and cultural history from the mid-nineteenth
century to the present. Her writing has appeared in
journals such as Comparative Literature Studies ,
Modernism/Modernity , Modern Language Quarterly ,
and Discourse , and she has just completed a book on
Marcel Proust.
JOEL F. RICHEIMER is an associate professor of phi-
losophy and one of the most esteemed lecturers at
Kenyon College. He earned his Ph.D. from the
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and has published
and presented philosophical articles in the areas of
perception, law, Aristotle, and science.
